(SPRINGFIELD, Mo.) With just eight weeks until the general election, democrats are continuing to focus on what they see as negative aspects of Congressman Roy Blunt’s record.

Just today, the Robin Carnhan campaign highlighted a new web video focusing on statements by Blunt on medicare, and state and national democrats linked reporters up with an article focusing on Blunt’s Abramoff connection.

Carnahan says she’s just doing it like President Harry Truman would.

“Harry Truman said a long time ago that people said he was giving them hell, but he was just telling the truth and they thought it was hell. So, we’re going to tell the truth about Congressman Blunt’s record. People need to know what they’re getting,” said Robin Carnahan in an interview in Springfield on Monday.

“Roy Blunt comes out here, professes one thing.  Goes to Washington, does something quite different. I want to make sure people know what his record is, what my record is, and who we fight for,” she said. “I’m going to be fighting for Missouri families like I’ve always done and Congressman Blunt, i’m guessing, is going to keep on fighting for the lobbyists and special interests he’s been working for for 14 years.”

Lloyd Smith, Execuitive Director of the Missouri Republican Party, took the attacks as an opportunity to mobilize volunteeers.

“Robin Carnahan is ramping up her negative attacks because she has no new ideas—nothing new to offer, just rubberstamp support for the same failed liberal agenda. The difference is that you have nominated Roy Blunt, who will put a stop to the reckless and unpopular liberal agenda,” Smith said in an email to supporters.

“Just like you, we know that the stakes in this election could not be any higher,” Smith said. He called on voters to volunteer in their local office.

Mindy Mazur, Campaign manager for Carnahan, said in a conference call with reporters last week, “Voters are going to see a lot more about Congressman Blunt’s record in the remaining stretch of the campaign.”

Blunt’s message focuses connecting winning the U.S. Senate seat to maintaining freedom as a nation.

“The issue at state in this election is pretty quickly summarized in are we going to live in a country where the government is bigger than the people, or are we going to live in a country where people are bigger than the government,” Blunt said at a campaign rally in Joplin last week.

He channels President Reagan often with the quote about freedom being something each generation should fight to maintain.

“Freedom is easier to maintain than it is to get back,” Blunt said.

Both candidates have negative television advertisements up regarding their opponent,  and have had for weeks now.
